Pouteria campechiana (commonly known as eggfruit, or canistel) is an evergreen tree native to Central and Tropical America, Southern Mexico. It is also cultivated in other countries, such as India, Brazil, the United States, Australia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and the Philippines. The tree typically grows to a height of 10 meters and thrives in well-drained soils under warm climatic conditions. It produces orange-yellow, oblong to oval fruits measuring up to 7cm in length. The fruit's flesh is sweet and dense, often compared to the texture of a hard-boiled egg yolk, hence the name "eggfruit”.
