Commonly called as acerola, Guarani cherry, and wild crepe myrtle. Acerola is an evergreen shrub or small tree with spreading branches on a short trunk. It usually grows upto 2–3 m tall. The bark of young branches is green and sparsely covered with curly-haired trichomes. Three years after planting, trees start producing fruits. Acerola is native to South America, Central America and southern Mexico.
Medicinal properties
The sour fruits of acerola are high in vitamin C, and acerola cherry is used as a food supplement. Acerola fruit may be eaten raw or used as a juice. They also contain other essential nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin B, and antioxidants. They are believed to have several health benefits, including supporting the immune system, promoting skin health, and boosting antioxidant activity in the body. Due to the presence of pigments like anthocyanins and carotenoids, it is also used as a food colorant.
