General description
The Star-fruit plant (Averrhoa carambola) is widely distributed around the world, especially in tropical countries such as Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and Philippines. It belongs to the family Oxalidaceae. Averrhoa carambola is slow growing species of woody plants with short trunk and best grows up to 6 to 9 m in height. Star-fruit is also known as Carambola. Fruits are usually small and dark green in colour when it is unripe, fruits turn yellow in colour when they are fully ripe. The entire fruit is edible, including the waxy skin. Unripe star fruits are firmer and sour, and taste like green apples. Ripe fruit may be cooked as a vegetable, pickled, or made into jams.
Medicinal properties
Star fruit is rich in vitamin C, oxalate and has negligible fat. Star-fruits are popular tropical fruits and used commonly in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicines to relieve ailments such as chronic headache, fever, cough, gastro-enteritis, diarrhoea, ringworm infections, and skin inflammations. The fruit is also shown to be useful in hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemia treatments.
