Terminalia bellirica is a is a large tree that grows up to 40 metres in height and is native to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and India. It is frequently found in monsoon forests and mixed deciduous forests, associated with teak. Leaves are petiolate, broadly elliptic, clustered towards the end of branches. Flowers are greenish yellow, in solitary, simple, axillary spikes.   

 

Medicinal properties

Terminalia bellirica has been widely used in Ayurveda for centuries in the treatment of various ailments due to its rejuvenating and health promoting benefits. The fruits are widely used in therapeutic formulations alone or in combination with other plant-based drugs due to their laxative, astringent, anthelmintic and antipyretic properties. They are used to treat disorders like hepatitis, bronchitis, asthma, dyspepsia, piles, diarrhoea, coughs, eye diseases.
