Pongamia pinnata is a rapidly growing tree, reaching up to 40 feet in height with a moderate shade canopy. It has medium-sized, hairless, alternate, evergreen or deciduous leaves, lavender-pink-white flowers, and sturdy brown pods. The flat, oval seeds are 10–15 cm long. The tree has well-developed roots, and the bark changes from gray to grayish-brown with a yellow interior.
