Our failure to value and nurture teachers and mentors may have contributed to the failure of many of our leading institutions to sustain a high level of excellence over time. This is perhaps true for a wide range of disciplines including medicine. What could be the reasons behind the collective neglect of our teachers? While we in India take a lot of pride in a tradition that greatly values our teachers, the situation is especially worrisome in many Indian institutions. What can we do to reverse the trend?
